Old East Dallas - Greenville AvenueOld East Dallas versus East Dallas: Is There a Difference?

Is there a difference between “Old East Dallas” and “East Dallas”?

Yes, there is a difference. “Old East Dallas” refers specifically to the historic core within the larger East Dallas area, known for its early 20th-century neighborhoods, historic homes, and rich architectural heritage. In contrast, “East Dallas” encompasses a broader region that includes both historic areas and newer developments, offering a diverse mix of housing styles, amenities, and communities.

The Inception of Old East Dallas:

Old East Dallas began developing in the late 19th century as an independent city separate from the City of Dallas. In 1890, this area that was simply known as “East Dallas,” was annexed and became part of the City of Dallas. Over time, the area acquired the “old” designation to differentiate it from newer neighborhoods. During its early years, Old East Dallas attracted prominent business leaders and professionals who built grand homes and established a thriving community.
